Radical Expressions with Variables
Worked solutions · Section 4.2, page 205 · Problems 49-55, 57-64
Radical rules
\(n\) = index (the small number on the radical)
1. Product property
\(\sqrt[n]{ab} = \sqrt[n]{a}\cdot\sqrt[n]{b}\)
Same index: split apart or join together
2. Quotient property
\(\sqrt[n]{\dfrac{a}{b}} = \dfrac{\sqrt[n]{a}}{\sqrt[n]{b}}, \quad b \ne 0\)
Root of the top over root of the bottom
3. Odd index
\(\sqrt[n]{x^n} = x \quad (n \text{ odd})\)
Sign stays: \(\sqrt[3]{(-2)^3} = -2\)
4. Even index = absolute value
\(\sqrt[n]{x^n} = |x| \quad (n \text{ even})\)
Never negative: \(\sqrt[4]{(-3)^4} = 3\)
- No absolute value on even powers: \(\sqrt[4]{(y^2)^4} = y^2\)
- No absolute value when all variables are positive
5. Pull out perfect powers
\(\sqrt[n]{x^{qn+r}} = x^q\sqrt[n]{x^r}\)
Exponent \(\div\) index: quotient comes out, remainder stays in
\(\sqrt{a^7} = \sqrt{a^6\cdot a} = a^3\sqrt{a}\)
- Squares: 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81
- Cubes: 8, 27, 64, 125
- Fourth powers: 16, 81
- Fifth powers: 32, 243
Exponent rules
6. Multiply powers with the same base (Product rule)
\(a^m\cdot a^n = a^{m+n}\)
Same base: add exponents
7. Divide powers with the same base (Quotient rule)
\(\dfrac{a^m}{a^n} = a^{m-n}\)
Same base: subtract exponents. Watch the signs: \(p^{7-(-1)} = p^8\)
8. Power raised to a power
\((a^m)^n = a^{mn}\)
Multiply exponents. Read backward to spot perfect powers: \(y^8 = (y^2)^4\)
9. Negative exponent = reciprocal
\(a^{-n} = \dfrac{1}{a^n}\)
Moves the factor across the fraction bar
10. Radical = rational exponent
\(\sqrt[n]{a^m} = a^{m/n}\)
Index becomes the denominator. Use it when indices differ
Simplest form
- No perfect \(n\)th power factor left under a radical
- No fraction under a radical
- No radical in a denominator
- Rational exponents: each base once, every exponent positive
11. Rationalize the denominator
Multiply top and bottom to complete a perfect \(n\)th power\(\dfrac{1}{\sqrt[5]{n^2}}\cdot\dfrac{\sqrt[5]{n^3}}{\sqrt[5]{n^3}} = \dfrac{\sqrt[5]{n^3}}{\sqrt[5]{n^5}} = \dfrac{\sqrt[5]{n^3}}{n}\)
\(n^2\) needs \(n^3\) more to make \(n^5\)
12. Reduce the index
\(\sqrt[4]{y^2} = y^{2/4} = y^{1/2} = \sqrt{y}\)
Use when the index and exponent share a factor
Problems 49-55: Simplify the expression
